Strange but True Laws - Memphis

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Ok, we’ve all heard of those strange but true laws. Laws that were put into place many many years ago that have no practical meaning in today’s society, but somehow they are still on the books and real laws. Here are a couple that are unique to Memphis:

In Memphis restaurants, it is illegal to give any pie to fellow diners; it’s illegal to take unfinished pie home and all pie must be eaten on the premises.
In the City of Memphis, it is illegal for a woman to drive by herself, unless a man is walking or running in front of the vehicle, waving a red flag in order to warn approaching pedestrians and motorists.

Our West Memphis Neighbors

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Over the weekend a West Memphis police officer shot and killed twelve year old, DeAuntae Farrow. Officers said that the boy pointed a gun at two officers, and one of them shot him twice. It was later discovered that the gun was a realistic looking toy gun.

Naturally, the comunity is very upset over this. Last night there was a town hall meeting to discuss the events. News cameras showed people gathering outside, some holding signs saying officers are trained to kill children.

Members of the community have expressed their disbelief that an officer could mistake a boy for some type of crimihnal.

Although, we should remember that children have been violent criminals. In Jonosboro it was children that were responsible for the fatal school shootings, and that’s just one example.

Instead of placing all of this blame on the officer, we should also question where he got this realistic looking toy gun.

It’s also interesting to note that the photo of the child that has been released in four years old.

Sqaure Dancing?

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Do you like to have fun?
Do like to socialize?
Do you like to eat?
Are you willing to try something new?

Then the Cotton Pickin’ Squares are looking for you!!!

You probably have never even thought about square dancing before (if you have that’s great). A lot of people don’t even know what it is, or may think that it is stupid or something that old people used to do wearing funny outfits. Well, that’s not true today. Square dancing can be tons of fun and a great workout. Just ask the Cotton Pickin’ Squares. They are a Memphis square dance group that loves to have fun. They meet every Thursday at 7pm at Holy Trinity church on Highland - 685 S. Highland (just past the U of M).

  • Memphis Fact?

    Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Here is a fact that I’m not so sure about:
Supposedly, Memphis is the only five-time winner of the nation’s cleanest city award.
If that’s true I can only wonder what other cities look like.

    Memphis Losing Superintendent

    Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Memphis City Schools Supt. Carol Johnson, Superintendent of the Memphis City Schools, has officialy announced that she is taking a job in Boston.
It seems that the majority of people are sad to see her go. She worked hard with the No Child Left Behind and supposedly Memphis has received a passing grade. Test scores are even reported to have gone up, which is great news for the school system that got so many negatives in the past.
However, some say this loss may be a good thing. Johnson got rid of corporal punishment in the schools. Some were not happy with this move.
Either way, it seems as though we have to start looking for a new superintendent.
What do you think about this?

    Memphis Restaurants

    Monday, June 18th, 2007

Memphis is home to some fine dining. Where we really excell is in the BBQ area. It’s so delicious and popular that several restaurants ship it all over the nation. Rendezvous and Corky’s are two of the more popular ones that do this. If you are from Memphis you have probably eaten at one of these great restaurants. For out of towners, check out Rendezvous, which is downtown, and my personal favorite. Or, go to one of the several Corky’s locations through out town.

    New Scandal

    Friday, June 15th, 2007

Ok, Memphis…yet another controversy surrounding our political leaders.
This time Mayor Herenton claims “I stand before you today as a victim of a politically motivated conspiracy.” This came in a news conference yesterday where he spoke about Gwendolyn D. Smith, who has come forward saying that a Memphis attorney tried to pay her to seduce the mayor and get it all on camera. She and the mayor claim that this was all done to shame him so he will not run for reelection this fall. Of course the attorney, Richard B. Fields, has a different interpretation of things, saying that Smith was trying to get her boyfriend out of prision by getting dirt on the mayor.

It will certainly be interesting to see what comes up next.
